Ch.3 Ancient Rome

During the Ancient Rome period, there was the discovery of concrete.  Before this discovery, everything was built out of stone for the most part.  Now they were able to build even grander buildings than the Greeks were able to.  For example, the coliseum was one of the newer buildings that was made.  They also used pillars similar to the Greeks but were able to make greater detail.  One of the things I found most interesting about this time was that they were able to create great detail in the interior of ceilings.  They were also able to create giant domes around buildings.  Similar to the Greeks, they had very open homes, in Ancient Rome the villas were built so that there was a chair in the middle of home so the father could sit and watch everything going on.  Other than some of the furniture and homes, marble was a common new feature added.  They would have marble flooring, and tables.  Overall, the brought a lot of the old materials gained from the Greeks and discovered many brand new materials to create a new civilization.

How these are featured today:

We now also use marble for counter tops as well as tables.

Response to Emily N's and Hannah's Blogs:
I love the way Emily N talked about how Rome discovered create, in my opinion that was one of the main features from this time,  She showed some good pictures connecting the stone with building developments from that time period.  Hannah's blog gave a great description of specific arts from this time period.  I love how she showed certain pieces of artwork and sculptures that were created.  She did not just show the buildings that were made.  Overall, both blogs were good descriptions of this time period.

Ch.3 Ancient Greece

Examples of the pillar styles as shown:

There were a lot of things going on in the Ancient Greece period.  There many Gods and Goddesses that were worshiped in the area, as a result, the civilians would build shrines and magnificent buildings in order to appease them.  Buildings like the Parthenon are a good example.  These buildings and temples were built with huge columns to create the structure.  The pillars are one of my favorite things about this time period because there are many different kinds, including the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian.  These styles of columns differed with the designs at the top.  Each pillar was carved out one at a time and were cut into great detail to look as similar as possible.  The Ancient Greeks would take time and care into building these.  Other factors that I liked about the Ancient Greek time period was the Greek key.  This symbol is designed in many different ways whether the colors or the repetition of pattern.

Examples of Greek Key:

Response to Emily and Danas blogs:
I really liked the way both Dana and Emily explained the significance on the pillars.  I also liked how they compared the pillars to what we have in Washington D.C. today. After reading the posts it made me think about how in Greece the pillars were always surrounding or apart of powerful buildings or significant places.  In a way we kind of took the pillars to emphasis places as well like Emily and Dana both said, in Washington D.C.  The white house, the senate, and everything else there has a powerful presence added because of the pillars.  In homes we put the pillars in offices, living rooms and dining rooms to emphasis the space.  Overall, both of their blogs were very interesting to read.

Ch.2 Ancient Egyptian

Ancient Egypt is mainly known for its great pyramids, while they were a main attraction gathered there are other patterns and features from this time period that we have stolen and carried on with us through today.  One of the main things we discussed were the loggias, loggias were rooms that had at least one side open to air.  They were a basis for the porches we know have in front of our houses.  Nowadays, we sometimes add a screen in front of the porch.  In addition to the loggias ancient Egyptians used many colors and paintings to decorate their homes.  They used wildlife details and intricate patterns.  We now see some of these patterns on ceilings in fancy buildings.  When building their homes, they used stone and brick.  We now use stone to build our houses and use the stone as decorative flooring.
Loggias(above) and stone walls(bottom) were two of my favorite ideas from this time.

Nowadays they look more like these:

Response to Alis and Arianas posts:
-It is awesome to be able to know past cultures and rulings and how they influenced the furniture designs and patterns we have today.   I liked how Ali brought up about the Kings and what kind of special furniture they had.  In Arianas post I liked the way she talked about the colors and how we brought royal blue, red, and gold into todays culture.  Overall, both of their posts were very good and interesting.
